Religious Maniacs

Just to prove that not all religious maniacs in the world are followers of Islam here's a report from the BBC Middle East which tells the terrible tale of Yishai Schlissel, an ultra orthodox Jew, who stabbed and killed a 16-year old girl, Shira Banki, attending a Gay Pride march in Jerusalem

Now incredibly this wasn't the first time that Schlissel had behaved in this way and he was allowed near the march even though lunatic had recently been released from a ten year prison sentence for committing a similar religious hate crime.

Incidentally Schlissel's sentence had been reduced from 12 to 10 years on appeal which must make his defence lawyers very proud.

In any event the key point is that Schlissel believed that God's words were telling him to attack Shira and her fellow Gay Pride protesters because homosexuality is a terrible crime according to holy books and scriptures, and if other people don't share such religious convictions then that's just too bad because in Schlissel's mind God's words and his interpretation of God's words trump everything else.

If you ask me, this is exactly the same kind of crazed, intolerant mindset that exists within the 'mad dogs' of the so-called Islamic State (IS) who have been throwing gay men off the top of high buildings in places like Raqqa recently.

And the scary thing is that Schlissel and followers of IS believe that it is the same God who is telling them to do these terrible things.

I suppose the only silver lining is that Schlissel lives in a secular state where he will now be brought to justice and sentenced to life in prison without any hope of release,  whereas the 'mad dogs' of IS live in a fascist religious state which is encouraging and glorifying their murderous actions.

Jerusalem Gay Pride: Israel teenage stabbing victim dies

BBC - Middle East

A teenage girl who was stabbed at a Gay Pride march in Jerusalem has died from her wounds, doctors say.

Shira Banki, 16, was one of six people attacked at the event on Thursday.

Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, who carried out a similar attack in 2005, was arrested at the scene.

Israel's government would have "zero tolerance" for Jewish extremists, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a security cabinet meeting on Sunday.

His comments also followed a separate attack in which an 18-month old Palestinian child died when his West Bank home was firebombed by suspected Jewish settlers.

The cabinet approved new measures to tackle ultra-nationalist violence against Palestinians, including detention without trial of Israelis.

The policy of detention without trial has long been used against Palestinians, but observers believe it has rarely been used against Israelis.

No arrests have been made so far over the West Bank attack.

'End the violence'

Hours after Shira Banki died, a vigil was held for her near the place she was stabbed. Hundreds of people attended, among them school friends, teachers, members of the gay community and supporters.

Dramatic images of Thursday's attack in Jerusalem showed the suspect reaching inside his coat and raising a knife above his head.

He then began stabbing marchers while screaming, before being tackled by a police officer.

Schlissel was released from prison just three weeks ago after serving 10 years for the 2005 attack

'We marched through blood'

The parade continued after the wounded were taken to hospital, with protesters chanting "end the violence".

Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the attack as "a most serious incident".

The Gay Pride event has long been a source of tension between Jerusalem's secular majority and its Jewish Orthodox communities.
