NLC Update (05/08/15)

Here are some interesting extracts from North Lanarkshire Council's annual accounts for 2014/15 which deal with the pension entitlements of senior officials including the Council's outgoing chief executive, Gavin Whitefield.

Now I have some comments about these figures which I will expand upon in the days ahead, but two points jump out to me straight away:

  • Does the chief executive's salary in 2013/14 (£149,524) includes a performance bonus?
  • If so, how much is that particular element of the chief executive's remuneration package?
  • If so, who approved the payment and how could a performance bonus be justified given North Lanarkshire Council's performance over equal pay?
  • Why does the chief executive's remuneration package jump from £149,524 in 2013/14 to £172,699 in 2014/15 - an increase of £23,175 or 15.5%
If you ask me, these figures simply reinforce what I've said previously about final salary pension schemes where relatively low paid workers effectively subsidise their much higher paid senior colleagues, which is why career average pension schemes are fairer and make more sense - to other employees as well as the public purse.

Meanwhile, of course, many low paid workers in North Lanarkshire continue to fight for their rights in relation to equal pay.

I'll have more to say on this subject in the next few days, so watch this space.
