North Lanarkshire Update

A number of Home Carers from North Lanarkshire have been in touch to say that local managers are trying to impose new shift patterns which are very different to the hours that people currently work.

Now the details are a bit sketchy, but my advice is that this is the kind of issue which the trade unions should take up although apparently there's no sign of them doing so as yet.

All employees are entitled to be priorly consulted over significant changes at the workplace and someone's working hours or shifts clearly falls into this category.

So don't be backward about coming forwards, as they say.

If anyone are called to a meeting to discuss their working hours, then the smart thing to say is that you want your local union rep to be present.

And any union rep worth their salt would be standing up for any members who find themselves in this position.

Now I know there's been lots of grumbling about the trade unions in North Lanarkshire and at least some of that criticism is richly deserved, if you ask me.

But that's no excuse to let the unions off the hook, so I would insist that they become  involved and get stuck in.
