A kind reader from North Lanarkshire has sent me details of the local trade union campaign to lobby senior Labour councillors over NLC's foot-dragging behaviour on equal pay.

The trade unions are targeting councillors' surgeries and here are some of the names on the 'hit' list:
  1. Jim McCabe - 2 Dec 2014, Tannochside Senior Citizens Hall at 5pm
  2. Jim Logue - 3 Dec 2014, Beechbank Community Centre at 6pm
  3. Helen McKenna - 3 Dec 2014, New Stevenston Community Centre at 7pm
  4. Stevie Grant - 4 Dec 2014, Abronhill Community Education Centre at 7pm
  5. Sam Love - 9 Dec 2014, Carrick Hall at 6pm
  6. Andrew Spowart - 11 Dec 2014, St Andrews Primary School at 6pm
  7. Jim Brooks - 13 Dec 2014, Shawhead Community Centre at 11am
  8. Robert Burrows - 16 Dec 2014, Fallside Centre at 5pm
Now as far as I know all of these councillors are Labour Party members and the Labour Party has been running North Lanarkshire with an overall majority since 1996, during which time North Lanarkshire can also boast about having four Labour MPs at Westminster.  

So if you ask me the trade unions are wasting their time with these councillor surgery protests, because by and large the same old faces have been running North Lanarkshire Council for years.

Why would they suddenly respond to a protest at their councillor surgeries, having shown no sign of doing the right thing up until now.   

A much better course of action if you ask me, would be for all three of the big affiliated unions (GMB, Unison and Unite) to withdraw their financial and other support to the Labour Party - for betraying the Council workforce over the way they have handled equal pay.

Now that would mean business, that would get the Labour Party to sit up and pay a bot of attention both in North Lanarkshire and much more widely as well.

So while I'm happy to publicise this trade union activity on the blog site, I think they are aiming at the wrong target and should stop pulling their punches.

SNP - Conspiracy of Silence

So here's the issue - two Glasgow MSPs (Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf) have been asked a reasonable question about their use of public money to employ two SNP councillors who already have full-time, salaried jobs as senior elected members of Glasgow City Council.   But these two public servants (both long-serving ministers) refuse to answer, so what to do next? One regular reader suggests raising the matter on the floor of the Scottish Parliament which is a good idea, but requires an MSP who's prepared to put down a written question for Scottish Ministers to answer.
