Don't Call Me Honey!

I learned something interesting food-wise over the Christmas holidays - that the everyday honey we buy in our local supermarkets is often mixed or cut with cheap honey.

And a quick check of the fridge showed this to be true with the offending jar being described as a "blend of EC and non EC honeys", non EC being code language for China often so I'm told.

"So what?", you might think. "What's the big deal, honey's honey after all!"

But you'd be quite wrong because there have been lots of scandals over in America in recent years with claims that Chinese honey is adulterated with artificial sweeteners and chemicals used in its production.

I've also been told since that Chinese production methods would not be tolerated in other parts of the world because in many cases all of the bees and their hives are destroyed once their honey has been harvested.

Now I'm still searching the web for more information on the subject but in the meantime I'll be making sure not to buy any more honey that's not clearly marked with its country of origin.
