Horns of a Dilemma

The Times portrays Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, as being caught on the horns of a dilemma over the Scottish independent debate.

Now the political problem facing Labour is not just 'one dimensional' if you ask me, because the accepted argument in Scotland is that we vote overwhelmingly for non-Conservative parties yet often end up with Conservative Governments.

In other words Westminster politics isn't working north of the border and does not, accurately at least, reflect the views of the people largely because Westminster elections are based on First Past The Post (FPTP), not proportional representation (PR).

Yet the same must be true in England, of course, because it stands to reason that the Conservative Party would enjoy a majority at Westminster, if Scotland did not send south such an implacably anti-Conservative delegation of Scottish MPs.

In other words, at different times Scotland does not get the Westminster Parliament that people vote for but the same is true for voters in England which is why, of course, UKIP has emerged as a de facto English national party albeit one that is well to the right of the SNP.
